Product Description
A box-type substation (referred to as a "box sub" for short) is a compact complete set of power distribution equipment that combines high-voltage switchgear, distribution transformers, low-voltage switchgear, energy metering equipment, and reactive power compensation devices into one or several boxes according to a certain wiring scheme.
It is suitable for use in 10/0.4KV three-phase AC systems as a means of distributing power along lines and for distribution. Compared to European box-type substations of the same capacity, American box-type substations have a more reasonable structure. European box-type substations install the transformer and ordinary high-voltage electrical equipment in the same metal shell, which results in a high temperature in the transformer compartment, making heat dissipation difficult and impacting output.
Additionally, European box-type substations use ordinary high-voltage load switches and fuses, and low-voltage switchgear in the box, resulting in larger dimensions. American box-type substations are different from European box-type substations in structure. From the layout perspective, the low-voltage compartment, transformer compartment, and high-voltage compartment are not arranged in a T-shape but in a cross shape. From a structural perspective, this type of box-type substation is divided into two parts: the front and rear.
The front part contains the high and low voltage operation intervals, including high and low voltage terminal blocks, load switch operating handles, no-load voltage regulating sectional switches, plug-in fuses, oil level gauges, etc. The rear part is the oil tank and radiator, into which the transformer winding, iron core, high-voltage load switch, and fuse are placed. Lightning arresters also use oil-immersed metal oxide lightning arresters. The transformer eliminates oil pillows and uses a sealed oil tank designed according to the principle of constant oil and gas gap volume, with the oil tank and radiator exposed to the air, making heat dissipation easy.
The low-voltage circuit breaker uses a plastic shell circuit breaker as the main breaker and outgoing circuit breaker. Due to its simplified structure, the footprint and volume of this type of box-type substation are greatly reduced. Because of its small size and one-sided door, its required footprint is only 1/4 that of a European box-type substation, and its volume is only 1/5 to 1/3 of a European box-type substation of the same capacity.
American box-type substations use fuses to protect the high-voltage side and plastic shell automatic air circuit breakers to protect the low-voltage side, which is the same as the protection method used in Chinese 10kV distribution transformers. High-voltage fuses protect internal faults in transformers, while automatic air circuit breakers protect low-voltage side line overcurrent, short-circuit, and undervoltage faults. The disadvantages of American box-type substations are that the load switch is immersed in oil, which causes the oil to be carbonized and decomposed by arcs, producing harmful gases such as acetylene, which decreases performance and has caused accidents.
Additionally, there are no visible disconnect points, making it inconvenient for maintenance. Since the low-voltage protection and metering methods used in the US are different from those used in China, American box-type substations do not come with low-voltage protection and metering.
To meet the needs of domestic users, domestically produced box-type substations are equipped with low-voltage distribution cabinets on the low-voltage side. Because box-type substations are exposed to direct sunlight for long periods, it affects the heat dissipation of plastic shell circuit breakers, making them unable to properly disconnect loads and short-circuit currents, which can lead to high-voltage side faults.
